SYDNEY, Jan 7 AAP - Water police have shepherded a hammerhead shark out to sea and away from a lifeguard who was unaware it was swimming near him at a popular Sydney beach.

Water police were patrolling the coastline between Cronulla and Eloura beaches on Tuesday when they spotted the shark swimming near a lifeguard about 11.30am (AEDT), police said in a statement on Wednesday.

The 31-year-old man was did not realise the shark was near him, police said.

"Police positioned their boat between the shark and the lifeguard and then succeeded in shepherding the shark back out to sea," the statement said.

As a result, it was not necessary to raise a shark alarm at the nearby beaches or remove swimmers from the water, police said.
